Remove a Laptop Hard Drive

Removing a laptop hard drive is generally quite simple.  However, CAUTION is required – you may damage or ruin your computer or hard drive. CAUTION: (this is not an all-inclusive list – but some important considerations)

  • Remove all power sources, including unplugging computer and remove battery
  • Avoid static electricity that could damage the computer components.  The safest way is with appropriate equipment, such as a grounding strap.

  • New hardrive (if replacing the old one)
  • Wrist grounding strap

STEPS:

  1. Set up the work area, including good lighting and static electricity protection.
  2. Remove power sources from the laptop.  Push the power button just to be sure.
  3. Find and access the hard drive compartment; you will probably need to unscrew a cover.  It may be necessary to pop the panel out with fingers.  Or, use plasti pry bars from an electronics repair kit.
  4. Find and disconnect any cables.  (There may or may not be any.)
  5. Identify the screws securing the hard drive brackets and remove screws.
  6. Slide hard drive out from socket and lift the hard drive assembly out.
  7. Remove the screws holding the hard drive into the mounting bracket.
